Welcome to ASAT - the Advanced Smart Antenna Technologies Research Group

Smart devices are recent technology development in different application sectors and is a life changing for various people. Internet becomes a life essential and today part of the basic human rights is to have internet access. Internet with the recent definition as a cloud has lead to key changes, every device nowadays is or will be soon connected to the cloud, and the internet of things is emerging rapidly. In addition the high speed growth in the smart mobile phones and tablet devices, iPhone iOS revolution with the Android OS phones all this demonstrates the enormous pressure on the telecommunication infrastructure, exploit the weaknesses in normal antenna systems, and the urgent need for a revolutionary solutions.

Smart antennas is the key for future devices to achieve the required/desired download speeds, eliminate weak signal coverage and dropped calls, boost the signal strength at all times, providing boosted signal for the rural communities.

In ASAT (Advanced Smart Antenna Technologies) research group we are working on various key technologies toward the miniaturisation of the smart antenna systems with novel technologies, techniques and algorithms. Our main focus is to make the smart antennas smarter smaller and cheaper in order for it to be integrated in all gadgets to provide superb wireless experience for all users.

The ASAT group work expands from the antenna elements design, to array creations, integrations, beam steering, driving algorithms, direction of arrival estimations, controlling software, various RF (radio frequency) components, impedance matching, adaptive tuning and much more.

The group research does not stop on the development of the novel smart antenna systems for the telecommunication field, but targeting various fields and disciplines as well are in our core focus. A key discipline ASAT is closely working with is the medical domain and specifically the exploration of our smart antenna technologies usage for the discovering of various diseases and the help in their curing. One key ongoing research at ASAT is the usage of smart antenna systems for cancer detection.

Energy harvesting is one of key areas we are working on. Energy saving is one of the key features of the smart antennas we target. However, harvesting energy from the surrounding environment will definitely increase the power saving gain, and add an exciting dimension in our research and application activities.

We invite prospect PhD students to contact us early in order to allocate them in our exciting running and emerging research projects.
